The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad on July 21, 1873 Adair, Iowa east of Council Bluffs and west of Des Moines, Iowa was the first train robbery committed by the gang. (However, it should be noted that it was not the first train robbery in history.) This robbery was believed to be committed by five to seven men. A rail was loosened, pulled out of line and when the engine arrived at that mark, it overturned.
The engineer John Rafferty was crushed as the train overturned and killed. It was said after this robbery Jesse vowed never to derail a train again. The passenger and other crew members were frightened and bruised but survived.
Dr. Settle's book indicated the monies liberated totaled was $2,000.00 from the trains safe and other valuables from the passengers. Others believe it could have been as much as $6,000.00.
The train was never removed and today is "buried" south and west of Adair, Iowa. The train now blends into the local landscape as a small loping hill or mound. A piece of the original rail is on exhibit at the Jesse James Museum in the town of Adair.
