Making Bigger Waves
Introduction
by Beckie-Anne Thain

In his blockbuster movie Titanic, filmmaker James Cameron used two ROVs, named Duncan and Snoop. Cameron used the ROVs to explore and film the wreck as well as to retrieve artifacts.

To film Ghosts of the Abyss, Cameron’s sequel to Titanic, two new ROVs—Elwood and Jake—were developed to penetrate deep within the wreck of Titanic. These ROVs cost more than $3 million and took three years to build. They incorporate the latest undersea and camera technology. (You can learn more at the Earthship.tv web site.)
We’re designing and building our ROV to dive deep into a scale model of the Titanic. Our mission is to find and recover 20 C-Probes hidden deep inside the wreck. The C-probes are 15 centimetres long and weigh 110 to 140 grams underwater. We have our work cut out for us—the time limit on the mission is 20 minutes!
There are two parts to the design competition. First, a team of judges will examine the ROVs, technical papers, and displays. They will ask questions to determine how much knowledge the teams have about their vehicles. Next, the teams will dive their ROV into a mock-up of the Titanic to retrieve the C-Probes.
