We arrived at MIT (Massachusetts Institute
of Technology) late Wednesday night, June 18. The next morning
all the teams met and were introduced to the different judges.
The keynote speaker—Dr. Martin Bowen—was the first
person to fly an ROV down the Titanic’s grand staircase.
It was amazing to hear a first-hand account of what it was like
to pilot a vehicle deep into the wreck.
Later, we went to MIT’s Zesiger
Sports Centre. There we set up our workstations, posters, and
vehicles.
After lunch, Dr. Marty Klein—a
pioneer in side scan sonar technology—made a presentation.
What a treat! Side scan sonar is used to find wrecks like the
Titanic. He showed us, through different slides, how side scan
sonar is used to discover shipwrecks and other artifacts under
the ocean. He challenged us to discover new technologies and
to explore the oceans.
Thursday evening we took the “T”
(Boston’s metro rail system) to the Boston Harbour IMAX
theatre to watch Ghosts of the Abyss, starring Elwood
and Jake. The 3-D special effects were awesome!
