Making Bigger Waves

On Saturday the competition continued for other teams. In the afternoon, Dr. Claire Calcagno with Deep Arch—the MIT deep water archeology group—talked to us about her experiences using ROVs to discover the secrets of ancient shipwrecks.
Finally it was time for the awards dinner. Along with our parents, grandparents, and siblings we entered the Walker Memorial Building. After dinner Bryce Merrill, the chief judge, began the award presentation. We cheered as our fellow competitors were recognized for the best poster, best tether management, best design. Near the end our team received the prize for the best documentation.
Finally it was time to award the prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the 12/25 Class and the Open Class.    We didn’t expect to win any of these prizes. Third place was awarded to our new friends from Newfoundland’s Memorial University, second place was announced and then it was time to find out which team was the winner.
“First place,” Bryce Merrill announced, “is a tie. It goes to Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and…”—Bryce paused for effect—“to White Rock South Surrey Home Educators.”
We were utterly shocked. Our mouths dropped open and we looked at each other flabbergasted.
As both teams ran (yes, we ran) forward we hugged and congratulated each other. It was an amazing moment.
Overall, this whole course has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The challenges we faced, the struggles we endured and the exhilaration we felt at the finish was all a part of an incredible process. I am very thankful for this opportunity.
