We had our first official meeting today.
We drove to Vancouver to meet with Harry Bohm, our mentor. Harry
is one of the foremost authorities in the world on ROVs and
using ROVs in science education. He is a diver who has built
numerous ROVs, AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles), written
several books, and, as a teacher, inspired countless students.
After working for many years at Simon
Fraser University’s Underwater Research Lab,
he launched his own company, WET Technologies.
Harry was the judging coordinator for
the 2002 ROV Design Competition and co-wrote the rules and specifications
for the 2003 ROV Design Competition.
After reviewing the rules of the competition
with us, Harry emphasized the importance of carefully reading
the competition specifications. Then he gave us several tips
and techniques for building our ROV. Harry was very encouraging
and we came away excited about the competition.
