If Africa failed to intrigue you before, it will after reading Safari Journal. It’s a fictionalized safari (which means “journey” in Swahili) with a North American student visiting Kenya. While following the adventures of Carey and his Maasai friend Pilot, you’ll learn tonnes about Kenyan wildlife, the Maasai people, and even a little Swahili.
The author, Hudson Talbott, visited a wildlife vet in Kenya and learned how the Maasai, an indigenous tribal people, were working to preserve their lifestyle and their “wild” neighbours. Safari Journal shows readers the real Kenya. As Carey describes, it’s a world without malls, cell phones, or Gameboys. But it will only survive if it finds a place in the modern world. As one Maasai character says, “The world is always changing and only those who can change with it survive.”

The book looked very inviting to read—all the drawings on the front make it so you want to find out what the book is about. Safari Journal is great for anyone who wants to learn about Africa. Even if you know lots about Africa, it’s still a good adventure!
I liked all the pictures and drawings in the book—the elephant pictures are the best I’ve seen in a long time. The only thing I didn’t like was that the book was too short. I learned all my favourite animals’ names in Swahili, such as lion is simba; elephant is ndovu; cheetah is duma; and giraffe is iwiga. It was an awesome read. Once you start it, you can’t put it down. The only thing I would change is to make it longer.
My overall impression of the book was that it was one of the best I’ve ever read. Out of a score of 10, I give Safari Journal a 20! It’s an awesome book for anyone who wants to take a walk on the wild side.
