Whales and dolphins—cetaceans—are always a fascinating topic. Jam-packed with pictures, this slim book fills the reader in on why these animals are so fascinating. Our early encounters with them were most likely exciting and scary. Which is probably the reason behind the name cetacean. It comes from the Greek word cetus, meaning sea monster. Kerrod covers whale and dolphin basics, including fun “Did you know?” facts. Who’d have thought that whales have whiskers on their faces? We all know that these animals make a lot of sounds or songs but the author fills the reader in on the “why” of it. And if you ever get tired of reading, just dive into the book for the pictures!

I think the design of this book was interesting with lots of photos and information. I enjoyed learning about whales and dolphins because they live in the ocean, unlike you and me. What I liked the best about the book was the “Did you know?” questions. What I liked least was the front cover: there should have been a picture of a whale. What I found interesting to learn was that pilot whales get stranded in groups. The whole book was fun to read because I really like animals under the sea. If I were going to change anything about the book it would be the cover. It should have a whale and a dolphin.
My overall impression was that this is a very good book for a project. I give it a score of 8 or 9 out of 10. The one word I would use to describe this book is: interesting! It’s a great information book and I will look at it many times in the future.
