What do locks and flush toilets have in common? They were invented by the same person! In Inventions and Discoveries you’ll learn many firsts. And often the first of anything was invented long before you thought.
Consider this: what did you use before email to communicate with a pen-pal? Pen and paper? Before even paper was available, people in India and Southeast Asia wrote on the leaves of palm trees. As for wrinkle-free clothes, people have sought the perfect crease for at least 2,000 years! From irons to telescopes, this book shows the evolution of inventions with pictures and projects to help you along the path.

I thought the topic was easy to understand, and I think intermediate students would like this book. I thought the activities were kind of easy and kids of all ages could do them. I also thought the materials for the included activities were kind of cheap to purchase and that the activities would help you understand the topic better.
I liked the “Keeping in Touch” part of the book the most because it tells you when the telephone was created and other stuff about keeping in touch with others. The part I liked least was “Shaping our World” because they didn’t give much information about airplanes and I really like airplanes. If I could change anything about the book, I would add in more information for some of the topics.
I especially liked the illustrations because they help the reader see what the information is about. Overall, I thought the book was great because it was full of information, pictures, and activities. If I had to describe it in just one word, it would be “cool”, and I would give it a score of 9 out of 10.
